IT FOLLOWS
It follows is a 2014 supernatural horror film about a girl who is being pursued by an unknown supernatural entity that can take the form of anyone. The idea is that the entity can be sexually contracted, so essentially the movie is about what would happen if an STI could take a physical form.

The opening starts with a slow, calm pan across of a seemingly innocent suburban neighbourhood. we then see a teenage girl running out of one of the houses looking panicked. We can tell she is in a rush because she is wearing high heels and very casual clothes, suggesting that she put her shoes on in a rush and just went with what was
about something because she keeps looking behind her and runs into the middle of the road. This is again suggested she seems to be fixated on something whilst she is walking backwards. she also seems startled when someone on the street asks her if she is alright.The first part of the opening was taken in one continuous tracking shot that makes the audience feel like they are part of the scene.

The non diegetic sound in this scene is creepy and eerie to set the tone of the movie. It mostly consists of simple music with occasional crescendos to highlight the possible danger that the girl is in. towards the end of the opening we see the girl running to her car and driving away. at this point the music has picked up and is faster to show the suspense. There is diegetic sound but there isn't a lot of dialogue, however there is emphasis on the screeching of the tyres as the car drives away to show how frantic she is. The lighting seems very natural, which again adds to the idea that this is happening in a very normal neighborhood.

This cuts to a shot of her in the car driving whilst ignoring her ringing phone. she still seems frantic and panicked in this shot as she is constantly looking behind her. The lighting also shows that it is now dark outside, meaning she has been driving for a while. As well as this the camera focus is on the girl rather than outside the car to show the expressions on her face. This then cuts to a shot of her parked car, which then slowly pans over to a wide shot of her sat down on a beach. The lighting is still dark, but the headlights from the car create a spotlight effect that makes her the center of attention in this shot. We then hear the phone ringing again and when she picks it up we can hear that she is crying. The next shot is closer to her than the last and is taken from a slightly high angle. we can also see that she is curled up on the floor, which emphasises how frightened and vulnerable she is. As she is speaking we hear non diegetic drum beats that suggest that something is coming for her. As she carries on speaking it cuts to a shot of her car and then a sudden cut to a close up of her dead on the floor from a high angle. The lighting of this shot shows that it is now the next morning and the blue lighting gives a cold and gloomy atmosphere to the shot. The last shot is a wide shot of her body on the beach with on of her legs bent over her body. The audience can confirm this as a horror at this point because there is a lot of blood on her in this shot.
